if ssh-keygen is used to generate a private/public key pair, it uses the passphrase entered in response to the passphrase prompt to encrypt the private key. the private key is then written to the file name specified as the second argument. if no name is specified, the file name is generated by a system-dependent default. (the name of the file is the result of openssls rand command, i.e., the file name is unique.) the public key is written to the file specified as the first argument.

when the public key is used to authenticate to a host, the user is prompted for the passphrase. this file should not be readable by anyone but the user. it is possible to specify a passphrase when generating the key; that passphrase is used to encrypt the private part of the file using 3des. neither of these files is automatically accessed by ssh-keygen but is offered as the default file for the private key. ssh-keygen does not automatically use this passphrase. sshd(1m) reads this file when a login attempt is made.

if the -h option is not specified, ssh-keygen prompts for a hostname to use in the certificate's common name. if the -f option is not specified, ssh-keygen prompts for the location of the keys on the remote host. if the -i option is not specified, ssh-keygen prompts for the private key file. the -c option specifies the algorithm to use for the key. the options --keyopt and --keyfile are used to specify options to ssh-keygen while generating the key; they are mutually exclusive.

the ssh-keygen command has the following options: -b bits specify the desired bit size for the key. if not specified, the value of the bits environment variable is used. -c comment specify a comment string to be associated with the key. this string will be added to the comment field of the certificate keygen pl7 pro v4 5 if the -c option is specified, it must be a string of up to 1024 characters. the -c option should be used in conjunction with the -s option and a comment should not be used if it is specified with the -c option. if the -c option is not specified, a default comment is generated.
